Hello beautiful people! I’m Sam. It’s a pleasure to meet you!

I’m a full-stack Software Engineer and a senior computer science student at The University of Alabama. I’m currently a Software Engineer at Procurated, a company that makes it easier for government procurement folks to do their job.

During my free time I like to knit, hang out with my awesome friends on Twitter, and go on road trips. I love learning new things about software, science, politics, and humanities. I’m intensely curious about humans and the world that we’ve built.

I strive to create and be a part of accessible, friendly, welcoming spaces where everyone feels safe and valued. As a neurodivergent person, I have a little trouble understanding social signals and norms, so sometimes I need clarification on things. I’m a staunch ally of minorities, and I’m always learning on how I can be better. If there’s something I’m doing that’s harmful, please call me out on it! I don’t take it personally.

Hoping to help create a more inclusive and welcoming community on here. Can’t wait to get to know you all!

I parallelized the tests + redid the Circle CI at Procurated for Hack Day today! Tests previously completed in about 17-18 mins, and they now only take 6-8 mins :)

It was a little tricky getting code coverage to still work, but luckily our Head of Engineering, Dave, pointed me in the right direction. Ended up using SimpleCov's collate feature to merge all of the tests after they finished.

Set up CI / CD with Circle CI at work yesterday. I usually use GitHub Actions in my personal projects, but Circle CI’s ability to debug via SSH really won me over. I’m also super surprised by how fast it is! Medium containers start up incredibly fast, caches download quickly, and our lint / type checking pipeline finishes in less than 30 secs from front to back.

Also set up secrets management with Doppler. We had our secrets spread across several different services before, which made onboarding new developers more tedious. We had to add users to three or four different projects just for them to access the secrets locally.

Doppler fixes that for us. It’s a single account and our developers have access to all the secrets they need. The CLI is super simple to use and the secrets are always up-to-date. It also syncs up with all of our deployment mechanisms via their API.

I created a new version of my personal site! The new version uses web safe fonts and no external assets, just HTML pages with a small set of inline styles. It’s based on the Bear blog theme. Hugo is very fast and very fun to work with. The blog is hosted on CloudFlare Pages, which helps it load super fast!

I started my final semester at The University of Alabama! My professors for my courses are wonderful, and I get to keep doing my job at The Nine part time. Couldn’t have asked for a better senior year 😁
